A highly underrated
movie with echos of Milos Forman, human and optimistic without
being soppy. A marvellous cast, with BW conclusively proving
that his acting ability goes well beyond that of an action star. |

A humorous while
thoroughly clichéd lesson in US geography - the "foreign"
sequences should have ended in cutting-room-floor oblivion.
The predictable ending is no more syrupy than the genre's conventions
demand. BW, as usual, "plays well with children".

BW’s appearance amounts to a self-ironic cameo, little more than ”blink and you miss him” - good fun, though. Worth seeing for the monkey it makes out of the Hollywood movie industry, not just for BW’s brief appearance. |

BW's sequence starts
with two solid minutes of deadpan silence, during which you
can read his character's mind. Add one of the most believable
love scenes and the best bathroom
scene in recent film, and one of the greatest pieces of self-irony
around. An amazing job of acting, in a movie that you surely
either love or hate already. |

No wonder this movie
did poorly at the box office. You expect a nice escapist "Bruce
blows up terrorists" yarn, and get a film that may actually
make you think, particularly in our post-9/11 day and age. The
question "how totalitarian may a society get to defend
its freedom" is presented in a thoroughly accessible manner,
enough to make anybody's popcorn stick in their throat. And
the amount of action is quite sufficient to keep you from falling
asleep. |

Possibly the most
overrated film of the past decade. Beautiful cinematography,
fine acting, but the "innovative" splatter-free suspense
concept has been around for all of seventy years, and "Plot-Hole"
is the script's middle name. |

"Scenes from
a marriage - Light"? Possibly, but not just in a negative
sense. Most of us will identify a lot more readily with the
run-of-the-mill problems in TSOU than with Bergman's study in
marital pathology. But the sticky-sugary Eric Clapton score
spoils the overall effect. |

Another one of those
"honest insubordinate cop" scripts with a rather ludicrous
final "twist", that they seem to get from a vending
machine somewhere in Hollywood. To make its potentially cardboard-cutout
hero so living and believable as BW actually does is its own
brand of brilliance. |

An unnremarkable
but quite entertaining piece of Hollywood nostalgia. BW fans
will enjoy seeing their star on horseback, and BW as a movie
cowboy should amuse "Die Hard" fans in particular.

Truth or delusion,
reason or madness, make your choice and then question it for
days after watching this movie. A visual masterpiece and BW's
best performance ever. Stay away if you want a straightforward
story with a clear-cut ending, or a hard-core sci-fi time travel
engineering manual. This is a film that you take part in creating
every time you watch it. |

Another variation
on the supernatural - delusional theme. Sufficiently open-ended
so that those of us who don't go for supernatural can enjoy
it too. Visually over-elaborate sometimes, but presenting another
believable, human BW protagonist. |

Not terribly original,
but a pleasant way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon. Extra
points for BW's self-irony concerning star worship, beautifully
set off by Amanda Peet. |
